A parcel estimate needs a measurement boundary

A carton measured before packing is not the same evidence as the final sealed parcel. This worksheet keeps a volume estimate separate from a carrier’s final billable weight.

Explore a volume estimate

Enter external carton dimensions in centimetres and the divisor stated in your own quote. The default divisor is a demonstration input, not a carrier rule. No values leave this page.

The result will show the arithmetic, not a shipping price.

Write down what was measured

Record whether the dimensions describe the product, loose packaging, an open carton, or the final sealed parcel. Note the date, the measuring person or source, the unit, and whether the longest external points were included. A product listing’s dimensions are not evidence for a packed carton.

The arithmetic is length × width × height ÷ divisor. In the demonstration, 40 × 30 × 20 cm equals 24,000 cm³; dividing by 5,000 cm³/kg gives a 4.8 kg volume equivalent. A different divisor changes the result. This tool deliberately does not choose a divisor for you.

Keep three quantities separate

Actual weight is a scale observation. A volume equivalent is a calculation under a stated rule. Billable weight is determined by the service’s terms, potentially including comparisons, rounding, minimum charges, and packaging adjustments. Do not rename the calculated result “final weight” or multiply it by an old rate and call that a current quote.

Ask a question that closes one gap

If a quotation does not identify its divisor, ask which dimensional-weight rule applies to the specific service and destination. If measurements were taken before consolidation, ask whether a final packed measurement is available. If there is a minimum or rounding step, record the exact rule and source separately. Leave the quote unresolved until that question is answered.

Our cost calculation guide provides related context for keeping known and unknown charges distinct. The order and parcel record guide is a companion for tracking a package’s status. Both are maintained by the same project and are not independent evidence of a carrier’s rules.

Update after the boundary changes

When repacking changes a dimension, add a dated observation instead of silently replacing the earlier one. Preserve the earlier calculation as superseded. Never post private tracking numbers, recipient addresses, payment records, or account screenshots in a public worksheet.
